Quad Cinema to Screen Films from Joan Micklin Silver and Sheila McLaughlin

Sheila McLaughlin’s “She Must Be Seeing Things”

Two rarely screened films from women directors will be shown at the Quad Cinema in New York City. Joan Micklin Silver’s “Between the Lines” will screen as part of the venue’s monthly “Underexposed” series, which celebrates hidden gems of indie cinema, and Sheila McLaughlin’s “She Must Be Seeing Things” will be featured in “Coming Out Again,” its monthly series spotlighting overlooked queer films.

Micklin Silver’s “Between the Lines” follows the intersecting lives of several employees at an alternative newspaper in Boston. The comedy stars Lindsay Crouse (“Buffy the Vampire Slayer”), Jill Eikenberry (“Young Adult”), Jeff Goldblum (“Grand Budapest Hotel”), and John Heard (“Home Alone”).

In honor of the film’s 40th anniversary, Micklin Silver will present her personal 35mm print of “Between the Lines” this Monday, August 7 at 7:00pm.

“Between the Lines” was Micklin Silver’s second feature film. Her feature directorial debut was National Film Registry selection “Hester Street,” a portrait of Russian Jewish immigrant living in 1896 New York. Micklin Silver’s other credits include “A Fish in the Bathtub,” “Crossing Delancey,” and “Loverboy.”

McLaughlin’s “She Must Be Seeing Things” is a psychodrama about the relationship between attorney Agatha (Sheila Dabney) and filmmaker Jo (Lois Weaver). Things are great until Agatha stumbles upon Jo’s diary and discovers that many of Jo’s past lovers are men. When Jo is out of town on a film shoot, Agatha “begins surreptitiously seeing (or hallucinating?) her partner out and about enjoying the company of men,” the Quad details.

The “Coming Out Again” series is co-presented by NewFest. This 30th anniversary screening of “She Must Be Seeing Things” will be held Wednesday, August 9 at 7:00pm, with McLaughlin in attendance.

McLaughlin also co-wrote and co-directed “Committed,” a biopic about actress Frances Farmer.

Visit the Quad’s website to find out more about the screenings.
