Queen Latifah To Be Recognized at “VH1 Hip Hop Honors: All Hail the Queens”

Queen Latifah in “Bessie”

Multi-hyphenate talent Queen Latifah will be celebrated at “VH1 Hip Hop Honors: All Hail the Queens.” The Grammy, Emmy, and Golden Globe winner will executive produce the event via Flavor Unit. Latifah previously served as EP on the one-hour VH1 special “Dear Mama,” which aired earlier this year.

A press release announced, “After a six-year hiatus, the revered ‘VH1 Hip Hop Honors’ is back celebrating the best and brightest in hiphop with a twist. This year’s live event will pay homage to the female pioneers, trailblazers, and trend-setters who led a movement and infiltrated the ranks of the male-dominated genre to make their voices heard and still do today.”

Latifah is the first honoree to be revealed. The names of the other female artists being celebrated at the event will be unveiled later this week.

The press release describes Latifah as a “true trailblazer in the world of hip hop,” and “one of music’s most well respected rappers.” The “Bessie” star has sold two million records worldwide.

“I chose to kind of take the route of uplifting women by trying to make some records that had some positive thoughts in it,” Latifah has shared. “There are ways to make records that appeal to the masses but still have a message that leaves something with you.”

“VH1 Hip Hop Honors: All Hail the Queens” will be televised live from NY on July 11.

Latifah and Jada Pinkett Smith are in talks to star in “Girl Trip,” a road trip movie that follows four female friends en route to New Orleans for the Essence Festival.
