As Operation Varsity Blues continues to make headlines, word comes that Queen Latifah is bringing a different kind of story about doing whatever it takes to make a teen’s dreams of college a reality. Latifah and Shakim Compere’s Flavor Unit production company are joining forces with Gunpowder & Sky for “Paper Chase,” Variety confirms. She’ll also act in the teen comedy.
Directed and co-written by Angela Tucker (“(A)sexual”), “Paper Chase” centers on Alicia, an “ideal-driven, well-meaning New Orleans teenager ready to reinvent herself at the fictional Kensington University in Atlanta,” the source summarizes. “When Alicia can’t pay her tuition fees, she and her cash-strapped mom, Valerie, must find a way to get the funds. With help from her best friend Jamilla, Alicia plans to throw a rager to raise the money to keep her college dream alive.”
Latifah received an Oscar nomination for her role in “Chicago.” She won an Emmy for exec producing “Bessie,” an HBO biopic about blues singer Bessie Smith that she also starred in. “Flint” and “Girls Trip” are among her recent credits. She can currently be seen in “Star.” Now in its third season, the Atlanta-set Fox musical drama tells the story of singers navigating the music industry.
