Fans of the “Fifty Shades of Grey” franchise and “After,” take note. “Queen Sugar” writer Felicia Pride is writing an erotic romance for Universal Pictures. Details about the film are sparse, but it’s titled “Deeper” and hails from Universal and Will Packer Productions (“Girls Trip”). Deadline broke the news.
Pride came up with the original idea and is exec producing. Universal SVP of Production Sara Scott is overseeing the project for the studio.
A staff writer on “Queen Sugar,” Pride has “written by” credits on episodes “Oh Mamere” and “By the Spit.” She co-wrote feature drama “Really Love” with director Angel Kristi Williams. Starring “Queen Sugar’s” Kofi Siriboe, the pic centers on a painter struggling to make his way in gentrifying Washington D.C.’s prestigious art world. Pride made her directorial debut with the short film “Tender,” which she also wrote and exec produced. She’s an author, has worked as an entertainment journalist, and founded The Create Daily, a resource for underrepresented creators.
“I tend to write a lot about the American dream and how characters push up against, remix, or reject it,” Pride has said. “I think that has a lot to do with my own challenges with being a creator and having a nontraditional career.”
