Quote of the Day: Anna Kendrick on Aging and Still Having to Play Pretty

Anna Kendrick is speaking up about the pressure to project a certain image as a young actress in Hollywood — namely, being seen as “hot.” Kendrick previously poked fun at her appearance in a beer commercial for last year’s Super Bowl, describing herself as “approachable hot, like the-hottest-girl-in-your-improv-class hot,” as opposed to “beer-commercial hot.”

In an interview with The Edit, the “Into the Woods” and “Pitch Perfect 2” star said, “I know that things will be more complicated as an older actress in ways that I can’t anticipate, but I would really enjoy getting to the point where the reason I’m getting roles or not isn’t based on if somebody thinks I’m hot enough. I feel like I’ve always been a character actress, and this is a blip in my career where I’m playing the ingénue. I’ll be a lot more comfortable and get excited when I’m playing women who aren’t supposed to be pretty.”

It’s totally understandable that Kendrick feels this way given the immense pressure for women in Hollywood to be seen as “fuckable.” That being said, things certainly are complicated for older actresses — finding work becomes a challenge (unless your name happens to be Meryl Streep). In the top 100 grossing films of 2014, women over 40 made up only 30% of all female characters. Basically, young actresses are forced to play ingénue-type parts while older women begin to disappear onscreen — a reflection of the kinds of roles available to actresses and the stories that Hollywood tells about women.
