A history-making cinematographer is set to make her feature directorial debut. Rachel Morrison, who became the first female DP to score an Oscar nod, will helm “Flint Strong” for Universal Pictures. Deadline confirmed the news.
Based on the 2015 doc “T-Rex,” the pic centers on 17-year-old Claressa “T-Rex” Shields, a Flint, Michigan local who dreams of becoming the first-ever American woman to take home an Olympic gold medal in Boxing. Barry Jenkins (“Moonlight”) penned the script.
Morrison received her historic 2018 Oscar nod for Dee Rees’ “Mudbound,” a drama about WWII vets who return home to their families in Mississippi.
Earlier this year the AFI alumna directed the pilot for “Hightown,” an upcoming Starz drama. The series tells the story of a National Marine Fisheries Service officer who discovers a body and commits to investigating what happened — and who is responsible. Morrison has also directed episodes of “American Crime” and “Quantico.” “Black Panther,” “Confirmation,” and “Dope” are among her credits as a cinematographer.
