“Rafiki” Filmmaker Wanuri Kahiu to Direct “Covers” for Working Title and Universal

Wanuri Kahiu is bringing another romantic tale to the big screen. The “Rafiki” director will helm “Covers,” a love story set in Los Angeles’ music scene, for Working Title and Universal. Deadline broke the news.

Kahiu landed the job “after an international search,” the source reports. Universal acquired “Covers'” script from first-time screenwriter Flora Greeson. Working Title’s Alexandra Loewy is executive producing the project.

Kahiu made headlines earlier this year when “Rafiki,” her feature about a romance between two young Kenyan women, was banned in Kenya due to its LGBTQ subject matter. Kahiu refused to alter the film, saying “I truly believe that an adult Kenyan audience is mature and discerning enough to be able to watch this film and have their own conversation.” The ban was temporarily lifted so the film would be eligible for Oscars consideration.

Earlier this year “Rafiki” became the first Kenyan feature to premiere at Cannes Film Festival. Since then it has screened at fests all over the world, including TIFF, Busan International Film Festival, London Film Festival, and AFI Fest. Film Movement has acquired its North American distribution rights but no premiere date has been set yet. Kahiu wrote the script with Jenna Cato Bass.

“I have always wanted to tell a modern African love story. Growing up, we rarely saw films of young Africans in love,” Kahiu told us of “Rafiki.” “We watched many Europeans and Americans fall in love on our screens over and over, but never us. I was in my late teens when I saw a young African couple kiss onscreen, and I still remember the thrill, surprise, and wonder — and how the film disrupted my ideas of romance. Before then, that kind of affection was reserved for foreigners.”

Kahiu’s previous directing credits include feature “From a Whisper” and shorts “Pumzi” and “Ras Star.” She is the co-founder of Afrobubblegum, a media company that supports, creates, and commissions African art.
