The Queen of Country is heading back to the small screen. TVLine reports that Reba McEntire has signed on to topline a new series from “Desperate Housewives” creator Marc Cherry. The Southern Gothic soap opera has received a script commitment from ABC.
According to the source, the two-time Grammy winner will play “a small-town Kentucky sheriff who teams up with a Middle Eastern FBI agent to investigate an act of terrorism during a local 4th of July parade.” Cherry will take on showrunning duties.
McEntire’s last starring role in TV was the short-lived ABC sitcom “Malibu Country,” which aired from 2012–2013. She earned a 2004 Golden Globe nomination for her role in The WB/CW’s “Reba,” which ran from 2001–2007.
The singer, songwriter, and record producer is among the best-selling artists of all time. She’s sold more than 85 million records worldwide.
While McEntire has found great success in the music industry and as an actress, she originally had wildly different career aspirations. “When I was a really little girl, I wanted to be a world champion barrel racer in the rodeo,” she has revealed. “When I got a little older, all I wanted to be was the best basketball player ever in the whole wide world! Even when I started singing professionally at the rodeos and the clubs, I’d spend all of my time playing basketball. It’s what I really wanted to do.”
If this new series gets picked up, we’ll get to see McEntire playing a sheriff. It seems very possible that she’ll get to show off some of her athletic skills in the role.
