Reed Morano has yet another project in the works. The prolific, Emmy-winning director has signed on to direct an adaptation of “The Memory Police” for Amazon Studios. Deadline broke the news.
Based on Yōko Ogawa’s novel of the same name, the pic is set on an” unnamed island off an unnamed coast,” where “things have begun to disappear — at first little things: ribbons and then roses. Soon, photographs. However, a rare few are able to remember all that no longer exists, but the Memory Police are determined to make sure that what has been erased, remains forgotten forever. When a young novelist realizes her book editor is one of those able to still remember, she hides him in a room beneath her floorboards. As the world closes in around them, they struggle defiantly to hold onto the truth,” the source details.
Morano, who launched her career as a cinematographer, made her feature directorial debut with 2015 Olivia Wilde-starrer “Meadowland.” Her other features include “The Rhythm Section” and “I Think We’re Alone Now.” She made history as the first woman to win both the Emmy and Directors Guild Award for directing a drama series in the same year. She took home the honors for helming the pilot of “The Handmaid’s Tale.”
“The Godmother,” a crime drama inspired by real-life Colombian drug lord Griselda Blanco, and “Sabaya,” a fact-based CIA thriller, are among Morano’s other features in the pipeline. She also has three Amazon series on the way: “Pretty Things,” “The Power,” and “Stolen Kids of Sarah Lawrence.” “Pretty Things” is a thriller that tells the story of a grifter who befriends a wealthy influencer. An adaptation of Naomi Alderman’s novel of the same name, “The Power” is set in a world where girls and women develop the power to harness electricity and shock people at will. “Stolen Kids of Sarah Lawrence” is based on the New York Magazine story detailing an abusive sex cult that rocked Sarah Lawrence College.
