After tackling a revenge thriller in “The Rhythm Section,” Reed Morano will step behind the camera to tell the true story of the abusive sex cult that rocked Sarah Lawrence College and made national headlines. The Emmy winner has been tapped to direct “The Stolen Kids of Sarah Lawrence,” a limited series being developed at Amazon. Variety broke the news.

Based on the New York Magazine story of the same name, the series will recall how a group of students at Sarah Lawrence “fell under the sway of Larry Ray, an ex-con and their classmate’s father, beginning in 2010. In February, Ray was indicted by federal prosecutors on charges of sex trafficking, extortion, conspiracy, forced labor, and more. Authorities began their investigation after the story first published,” the source details.

Blumhouse Television snagged the rights to the project last year.

Morano is attached to direct the pilot and serve as exec producer on “The Power,” another series in development at Amazon, where she’s under an overall deal. An adaptation of Naomi Alderman’s novel of the same name, “The Power” tells the story of a world where girls and women develop the power to harness electricity and shock people at will.

In 2017 Morano became the first woman in 22 years to take home an Emmy Award for directing a drama series. She won for Hulu’s “The Handmaid’s Tale,” an adaptation of Margaret Atwood’s dystopian novel. “Billions” and “Halt and Catch Fire” are among Morano’s other small screen credits. Her features include “Meadowland,” “I Think We’re Alone Now,” and this year’s Blake Lively-starrer “The Rhythm Section.” Morano will direct “Avengers: Endgame” actress Zoe Saldana in “Sabaya,” a fact-based CIA thriller.
