News, Women Producers

Reese Witherspoon Bets on Kimberly McCreight as Next YA Sensation

Can’t decide on next month’s book club selection? Let Reese Witherspoon help.

For nearly a decade, Witherspoon has been producing adaptations of novels with complicated female protagonists written by women authors — and she has excellent taste.

Witherspoon’s first outing as executive producer was Legally Blonde 2, but she quickly moved on to securing the rights for Rebecca Harrington’s Penelope, Gillian Flynn’s Gone Girl, Cheryl Strayed’s Wild, and now Kimberly McCreight’s upcoming YA trilogy The Outliers, which won’t arrive in bookstores until late 2015.

According to Variety, The Outliers will focus on “a young woman [whose] best friend goes missing and turns up in a remote spot in the woods with a group called the Outliers, who claim to be able to harness ‘intuition’ and turn it into a powerful psychological weapon. She joins the Outliers but soon finds herself running for her life.”

McCreight’s debut novel Reconstructing Amelia, about a mother who investigates her prep-school daughter’s mysterious death drew comparisons to Gone Girl (another Witherspoon project) when it was released in December 2013.

Witherspoon’s active on Twitter, but I’d love for her to spend more time on her GoodReads account.
