Refinery29’s Shatterbox Anthology short film series highlighting female filmmakers has launched.
On August 28, the first of 12 short films, a documentary called “Watching You, Watching Me,” directed by Pamela Romanowsky (“The Adderal Diaries”), was released. The doc follows the experience of being viewed through someone else’s eyes.
“There’s one thing you need to know” Refinery29 says about the new series, “We’re not here to make you comfortable — we’re here to tell the true stories of power and loss from our own point of view. According to USC’s Annenberg School for Communication and Journalism, almost 4,000 short films were shown at festivals in the U.S. between 2010 and 2014, and only 32 percent of them had female directors. It’s time to make a change and shatter any obstacle in our way. Welcome to the Shatterbox Anthology.”
As Women and Hollywood previously reported, other directors involved include Kristen Stewart, Chloë Sevigny, and Gabourey Sidibe, all making their directorial debuts, as well as Academy Award nominee Jessica Sanders, Tribeca Film Festival Nora Ephron Prize winner Meera Menon, Webby Award founder and Emmy nominee Tiffany Shlain, Courtney Hoffman, Jessica Dimmock, Robin Cloud, Roja Gashtili, Julia Lerman, and Anu Valia.
“These films deal with gender, sexuality, choice, and power from the rarely seen female gaze. We are giving 12 female directors the chance to spark a change in the industry. Our hope is that this will inspire others to support female projects, writers, directors, gaffers, stylists, and fully representative casts,” the Anthology’s new page says.
The series will be available on Refinery29’s page devoted to the Anthology, and over on Comcast’s Watchable streaming site. The 12 films will be released once a month over the course of the next year.
