ReFrame, a Hollywood inclusion program that boasts 50 industry leaders among its ranks, has set its sights on updating show business’ current hiring practices — i.e. its habit of employing mostly white men. According to Deadline, the initiative has put together a handbook “with numerous key proposals its organizers believe will help promulgate meaningful reform and diverse hiring practices in the film and TV businesses.”
One of the handbook’s recommendations is a sponsorship program that will see industry professionals mentor protégés at companies across Hollywood.
Speaking to Deadline, ReFrame organizer and “Bridesmaids” director Paul Feig touted the sponsorship program. “What I like about this is that it is very well researched and thought out, with real tangible steps that over time will help,” he said. Feig himself sponsored “SMILF” creator Frankie Shaw.
“What I like about [the sponsorship program] is that it is very well researched and thought out, with real tangible steps that over time will help,” “Bridesmaids” director and ReFrame organizer Paul Feig told Deadline. “The sponsorship of people to provide extra validation to create more diversity hiring, well, I have seen it work,” he said. “I mentored Frankie Shaw, and then it was time to tell someone this person was awesome, I told David Nevins at Showtime that she was the real deal. After ‘SMILF,’ the rest is history. This will take that sponsorship to a much bigger scale as people who are trusted in the industry vouch for those new voices who haven’t gotten a shot. It is a very practical thing we can do to help feed the pipeline.”
Companies including Netflix, Lionsgate, Showtime, TNT/TBS, Annapurna, PGA, and SAG-AFTRA “have stepped up to help lead the initiative,” Deadline writes. Others have expressed interest and are in the process of meeting with ReFrame.
ReFrame launched last year in partnership with Women In Film (WIF) and Sundance Institute with the goal of addressing Hollywood’s woman problem. It previously introduced the Culture Change Toolkit, a resource that advises companies on diverse hiring, and a stamp for movies and TV that signifies the project was made with a demonstrable effort at inclusive hiring.
“The industry’s deep-rooted business practices need to flex and bend to cultivate a marketplace for content that serves diverse audiences,” said WIF, LA prez and ReFrame Ambassador Cathy Schulman. “We are so encouraged that a first group of courageous leaders have come together as social activists to better serve the inclusive community, which will ultimately increase bottom lines across the industry.”
