Remaking Hollywood – Conversation with Lisa Cortés, Anne Carey, & Mary Jane Skalski

The Girls Club’s latest Remaking Hollywood: How to Build a Better, More Inclusive Future conversation will center producers Lisa Cortés, Anne Carey, and Mary Jane Skalski — how they are dealing with the productions shutdown and potential ideas for how things can be different in the future. The discussion will take place Thursday, April 23, at 4 p.m. EST.

Cortés is an award-winning film producer and director. The film “Precious” (2009), which she executive produced, received Sundance’s Audience Award and Grand Jury Prize for best drama. Marking the acting debut of Gabourey Sidibe, the film was nominated for six Academy Awards and won two. 2019’s “The Apollo,” an HBO documentary, explores African American cultural and political history through the story of the legendary Apollo Theater. Her directorial debut, “The Remix: Hip Hop X Fashion” (2020), traces the impact of street fashion and African American creativity on global cultural trends. Her early career as a music executive was launched at the iconic Def Jam label and Rush Artist Management; she also was VP of A&R atMercury Records, and founded the Loose Cannon label. Her film productions have received over 70 international awards and nominations.

Carey is President of Production at Archer Gray, a hybrid production, finance, and venture company based in New York City. Carey’s notable recent film credits include the Netflix film “Lost Girls,” directed by Liz Garbus and written by Michael Werwie, which recently premiered at the 2020 Sundance Film Festival; “Can You Ever Forgive Me?,” directed by Marielle Heller, written by Nicole Holofcener and Jeff Whitty and starring Melissa McCarthy and Richard E. Grant with BAFTA nominations and Academy Award nominations across the board; Academy Award-nominated “20th Century Women,” written and directed by Mike Mills, starring Annette Bening; Marielle Heller’s “The Diary of a Teenage Girl,” starring Kristen Wiig and Alexander Skarsgard; and “Mr. Holmes” directed by Bill Condon, starring Ian McKellen and Laura Linney.

Skalski is a producer whose career spans over 20 years, specializing in taking projects from inception through release. Credits include “The Station Agent,” “Very Good Girls,” “Mysterious Skin,” and “American Animals.” In addition to producing, Skalski currently serves as the President of Production for Echo Lake Entertainment, a production, management, and financing company.
