India is the latest country to submit a woman-directed film to the Academy. The Hindu reports that Rima Das’ “Village Rockstars” will represent the county as this year’s foreign-language Oscar entry.
“Village Rockstar” follows a 10-year-old village girl (Bhanita Das) who longs to overcome her social circumstances by starting her own rock band. A self-taught filmmaker, Rima Das predominantly employs non-actors from her native village in Assam. According to film critic and filmmaker Utpal Borpujari, “Village Rockstars” is “the first Assamese film to be sent as an official entry, in fact first from the northeast.”
Since its premiere at TIFF last year, Das’ film has picked up various awards throughout the festival circuit. Per Variety, it also won best film on gender equality and the young critics award at the Mumbai Film Festival; best artistic contribution at Cairo; and best original score at Buenos Aires.
At India’s own national film awards, “Village Rockstars” won best editing, best child actress, and best sound. It is also the second Assamese film to win the Swarna Kamal prize for Best Feature Film.
Das’ latest feature, “Bulbul Can Sing,” premiered at TIFF 2018. Against the same village backdrop of Assam, Das instead follows a teenage girl who begins to question her love life and adolescence just as her best friend is hit with tragedy.
Das’ film is one of many women-directed features vying for a nomination spot this year. Other submissions include Rungano Nyoni’s “I Am Not a Witch,” Darya Zhuk’s “Crystal Swan,” Cristina Gallego and Ciro Guerra’s “Birds of Passage,” Liina Trishkina-Vanhatalo’s “Take It or Leave It” Mouly Surya’s “Marlina the Murderer” and Nadine Labaski’s “Capernaum.”
