Robin Wright’s stepping away from the political machinations of Washington and heading into the wild. The “House of Cards” alumna is set to make her feature directorial debut with “Land,” a drama about a grieving woman who goes off the grid. She’ll also star in the pic. Variety confirmed the news.
Penned by Liz Hannah (“The Post”) and Jesse Chatham, “Land” sees a lawyer (Wright) in the throes of grief who decides to radically change her life. After taking advice from online survivalists, she “moves to the most unpopulated area in the U.S., living in a cabin in the Shoshone National Forest in Wyoming,” the source details. “There, she must learn to hunt, fish and grow her food as she faces brutal winters, a challenging landscape and local wildlife that could kill her at any moment. In crossing paths with Joseph, a First Nations local, Edee begins to confront her demons.”
Allyn Stewart (“Sully”) and Lora Kennedy (“Wonder Woman”) developed “Land” and are among its producers. Sales for the pic are set to begin at Cannes.
In addition to her Emmy-nominated role as Claire Underwood on “House of Cards,” Wright directed 10 episodes of the Netflix political thriller.
“Robin proved herself a tour de force taking in hand ‘House of Cards’ as a director as well as its lead actor,” said HanWay Films MD Gabrielle Stewart. “She speaks very eloquently and passionately about wanting to tell the story of a woman’s journey through loss and pain, where only by giving herself to nature can she find a path to inner peace and redemption.”
In 2016 Wright fought for — and apparently won — pay parity with co-star Kevin Spacey. However, in 2017 news surfaced that she did not receive equal pay after all. Wright reportedly received $420K per episode, as compared to Spacey’s $500K. “I don’t think I’m getting paid the same amount,” Wright said. “It’s such a male-dominant workforce still. There’s a conditioning. And changing the condition of men is what needs to happen.”
Wright won a Golden Globe for her performance in “House of Cards” in 2014. Her recent screen credits include “Wonder Woman” and “Blade Runner 2049.” She’ll appear in “Wonder Woman 1984,” due out in summer 2020.
