Roswell Reboot in the Works at The CW, Carina Adly MacKenzie Penning the Script

Shiri Appleby in “Roswell”

Long before Shiri Appleby called the shots on a “Bachelor”-esque reality dating TV show on “UnREAL,” she played a teenage girl in a whirlwind romance of her own on “Roswell.” She wasn’t dealing with a dozen other women vying for his attention on-camera, but their relationship had a major complication: she was a human and he an alien. Now “Roswell” is getting a reboot at The CW but with a timely twist.

“The new, one-hour drama series would follow the daughter of undocumented immigrants who reluctantly returns to her tourist-trap hometown of Roswell, New Mexico,” Variety reports. “There she discovers a shocking truth about her teenage crush who is now a police officer: he’s an alien who has kept his unearthly abilities hidden his entire life. She protects his secret as the two reconnect and begin to investigate his origins, but when a violent attack and long-standing government cover-up point to a greater alien presence on Earth, the politics of fear and hatred threaten to expose him and destroy their deepening romance.” Carina Adly MacKenzie (“The Originals,” “The Flash”) is penning the script and serving as an executive producer.

The original series, which aired on The WB (now The CW) and later on UPN, was set in high school and immigration wasn’t part of the storyline. Both the old and new “Roswell” are based on Melinda Metz’s book series.

The original “Roswell’s” supporting cast included Katherine Heigl (“State of Affairs”) and Colin Hanks (“Life in Pieces”).
