Roxanne Benjamin is bringing zombie horror-comedy “Night of the Comet” back to life. The “XX” and “Southbound” director is penning a reimagining of the cult classic for Orion Pictures, Deadline confirms.
Released in 1984, the original pic tells the story of two sisters tasked with taking on cannibal zombies when a comet decimates earth — and wipes out most living creatures in the process. “Made on a budget of under $1M it went on to make $14M in the U.S.,” the source notes.
Benjamin co-directed “Southbound” and female horror anthology “XX.” She made her solo directorial debut with “Body at Brighton Rock,” which she also wrote and directed. Currently in post-production, the survival thriller follows a park ranger on a secluded mountain trail. No word on when the film will hit theaters, but Magnet has acquired the pic.
“I think, in the indie horror world, everyone is making movies on the same level and we are all in the trenches together. I think the disconnect comes from making that leap from indie film to studio film or television. That is where all those statistics get very grim in terms female representation, particularly in the genre,” Benjamin has said. “There are so many other factors in there, you don’t know what part of that is causality and what part of that is correlation. The film industry has never been a meritocracy,” she emphasized. “If women are not getting a chance to direct those, then they are not going to be getting more work. One of the big reasons given is ‘we can’t find any women who are experienced to direct a certain thing.’ Of course you want to go with the most experienced and best person for any job, but if they are not given that initial experience to be able to get the experience for those bigger budget projects, then that’s a problem.”
