S.J. Clarkson to Direct Netflix’s “The Defenders”

S.J. Clarkson is returning to the Marvel universe. Clarkson, who directed the first two episodes of “Jessica Jones,” has signed on to helm Episodes 1 and 2 of Netflix’s upcoming original series “The Defenders,” a press release from Marvel announced. The eight-episode limited series is scheduled to debut on the streaming behemoth in 2017.

Like “The Avengers,” “The Defenders” sees a number of superheroes joining forces. According to the press release, the series follows Daredevil (Charlie Cox), Jessica Jones (Krysten Ritter), Luke Cage (Mike Colter), and Iron Fist (Finn Jones). The “quartet of singular heroes” has “one common goal — to save New York City. This is the story of four solitary figures, burdened with their own personal challenges, who realize they just might be stronger when teamed together.”

In addition to helming the first two episodes of “The Defenders,” Clarkson will also serve as an executive producer on the premiere episode.

“S.J.’s take on the material is outstanding,” said Jeph Loeb, Marvel’s Head of Television. “We loved her work on Marvel’s ‘Jessica Jones’ and couldn’t think of a more talented and accomplished person to helm the first two episodes of Marvel’s ‘The Defenders.’”

It was recently announced that every episode of “Jessica Jones’” sophomore season will be directed by women.

Clarkson’s credits include the British comedy series “Love, Nina,” “Vinyl,” “Orange is the New Black,” “The Bridge,” and “Dexter.” She launched her directing career in musical theater.

Check out an in-depth discussion with Clarkson titled “What’s The Directors Role?” below. “[Directing] really is the most extraordinary job, and I feel blessed to do it,” Clarkson says. She also explains how she’s particular about visuals as a director — so presumably she’s pleased to get the first crack at the world of “The Defenders,” as she did in “Jessica Jones.”
