Sahar Jahani is joining forces with Mindy Kaling to offer an updated take on “Shop Around the Corner.” According to Variety, they’re are working on a film adaptation of Uzma Jalaluddin’s novel “Hana Khan Carries On,” a story that “puts a modern Muslim spin on a premise first made famous by the Ernst Lubitsch classic … which was later updated with Nora Ephron’s ‘You’ve Got Mail.'”
Published earlier this year, “Hana Khan Carries On” tells the story of two competing Halal shops. “Hana’s family owns a restaurant called Three Sisters in the Golden Crescent neighborhood of Toronto, and its business is threatened when a more commercial, fusion-based eatery moves in down the street. The catch is that Hana and the owner of the other restaurant, Aydin, have an instant romantic connection,” the source summarizes.
Jahani is penning the script, and Kaling and Jessica Kumai Scott will produce via Kaling International.
“The Bold Type,” “Ramy,” and “13 Reasons Why” are among Jahani’s writing credits.
Currently in production on the first season of HBO Max comedy “The Sex Lives of College Girls,” Kaling recently launched the second season of “Never Have I Ever” on Netflix. The coming-of-age story centers on a first-generation Indian-American teenager living in Sherman Oaks, California. Kaling co-created the streaming hit. She received six Emmy nods during her tenure on “The Office,” and went on to create and star in “The Mindy Project.” Her film credits include “A Wrinkle in Time,” “Ocean’s Eight,” and “Late Night.” She penned the screenplay for the latter, a comedy about a late night comedy legend and the woman writer she’s pressured to hire.
