A24 has snagged North American rights to “Saint Maud” following its world premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival. Rose Glass’ psychological horror pic was the only woman-directed film to screen in the fest’s Midnight Madness program. Deadline confirmed the acquisition.
Penned by Glass, “Saint Maud” tells the story of “a pious but unstable” nurse (Morfydd Clark) who “becomes convinced that she must save the soul of her dying employer … as signs of eternal damnation begin to present themselves in their isolated seaside town,” the source summarizes.
Sony Pictures Worldwide Acquisitions (SPWA) scored all international rights for the film excluding the U.K. and France.
You can catch “Saint Maud” at its U.S. premiere today, September 19, at Fantastic Fest, or at the BFI London Film Festival next month.
“Saint Maud” marks Glass’ feature directorial debut. “Room 55” and “The Silken Strand” are among the shorts she’s helmed.
Another woman-directed genre pic screening at the BFI London Film Festival, “Little Joe,” just found a home. The BFI acquired Jessica Hausner’s first English-language feature, a sci-fi drama, for distribution in the UK and Ireland. A press release announced the news.
The film about a plant breeder who engineers a special flower already secured distribution in North America from Magnolia.
Hausner’s previous credits include “Lourdes” and “Amour Fou.”
