Sally El Hosaini and Hildur Guðnadóttir to Receive TIFF Tribute Awards

El Hosaini: IMDb

Egyptian filmmaker and screenwriter Sally El Hosaini and Academy Award-winning Icelandic artist and composer Hildur Guðnadóttir are set to be honored with TIFF Tribute Awards. The former will be recognized with the TIFF Emerging Talent Award and the latter with the Variety Artisan Award. A press release announced the news.

El Hosaini’s debut feature, “My Brother the Devil,” made its world premiere at Sundance and went on to screen at more than 40 international festivals. It won Best European Film at Berlinale and Best Newcomer at the BFI London Film Festival, and was nominated for Best Debut at the British Independent Film Awards, among other honors. Her latest film, “The Swimmers,” a portrait of Syrian refugees and competitive swimmers Yusra and Sara Mardini, is opening TIFF this year.

The TIFF Emerging Talent Award is presented in the spirit of Mary Pickford, a Torontonian actor, producer, and co-founder of United Artists. “Night Raiders” filmmaker Danis Goulet received the honor last year.

Guðnadóttir won an Oscar for “Joker” and an Emmy for “Chernobyl.” Her other credits include “Sicario: Day of the Soldado” and “Mary Magdalene.” She composed the score for “Women Talking,” Sarah Polley’s adaptation of Miriam Toews’ novel about women in an isolated religious community grappling with the aftermath of sexual abuse. The drama is making its North American premiere at TIFF.

Now in its fourth year, the TIFF Tribute Awards will take place September 11.
