“Gentleman Jack” and “Happy Valley” fans have something to look forward to: a new series from creator Sally Wainwright. Disney+ announced its first slate of U.K. scripted shows, and “The Ballad of Renegade Nell” is among them.
Written by Wainwright and set in the 18th century, the series centers on “‘swashbuckling highwaywoman’ Nell Jackson, who is forced into a life of robbery when she’s framed for murder,” The Hollywood Reporter details.
Wainwright, who is among “The Ballad of Renegade Nell’s” exec producers, described the show’s eponymous protagonist as “a ball of irreverent, blustering energy, fighting against the privileged gatekeepers of English society in 1705, battling to contain mysterious forces within her and her enemies as she goes on the run with her two sisters.”
The winner of four BAFTA TV Awards, Wainwright has been recognized for her work on crime drama “Happy Valley” and “Last Tango in Halifax,” a romance about widowed seniors who rekindle their relationship from six decades prior.
“Gentleman Jack,” Wainwright’s HBO/BBC One historical drama about Anne Lister, has been renewed for a second season. The Suranne Jones-starrer will return later this year.
