Sam Taylor-Johnson in Talks to Helm Black List Script ‘Chappaquiddick’ About Ted Kennedy

“Fifty Shades of Grey” director Sam Taylor-Johnson appears close to booking her next project.

Taylor-Johnson will be ditching Christian Grey’s red room in favor of Martha’s Vineyard with “Chappaquiddick,” a dramatization of the week following Ted Kennedy’s 1969 car accident, which became a national scandal for killing Mary Jo Kopechne and for the nine-hour delay in the senator’s reporting the incident to authorities.

The “Chappaquiddick” screenplay made the 2015 Black List.

“I’ve done a lot of true life stories, many sports stories, but this one had a deep impact on this country,” commented producer Mark Ciardi. “Everyone has an idea of what happened on Chappaquiddick, and this strings together the events in a compelling and emotional way. You’ll see what [Senator Ted Kennedy] had to go through.”

The Hollywood Reporter lays out the logline thusly: “On the eve of the moon landing, Senator Kennedy becomes entangled in a tragic car accident that results in the death of former Robert Kennedy campaign worker Mary Jo Kopechne. The senator struggles to follow his own moral compass and simultaneously protect his family’s legacy, all while simply trying to keep his own political ambitions alive.”
