Sam Taylor-Johnson Will Direct Fifty Shades of Grey

nullWe’ve reported a lot about the upcoming Fifty Shades of Grey adaptation.  We were a little wary about the producing team, Dana Brunetti and Michael De Luca, from The Social Network working on the film but then we were a bit more optimistic when they picked screenwriter, Kelly Marcel, to adapt the book for the screen.

And now they’ve secured a director for the film — and it’s a woman — Sam Taylor-Johnson.  Whenever a woman gets a coveted directing gig, on a high profile film, it is a good day.  She may not be as well known now, especially here in the US, but people will get to know her really quickly.

Taylor-Johnson’s first feature is Nowhere Boy, about a young John Lennon (There is an interview with her about Nowhere Boy in In Her Voice: Women Directors Talk Directing.  She went at that time by the name Sam Taylor Wood.) She’s was known to De Luca as they are currently working together on an adaptation of Robert Goorlick’s novel A Reliable Wife

De Luca feels that Taylor-Johnson is a perfect fit for Fifty Shades of Grey.

Sam’s unique ability to gracefully showcase complex relationships dealing with love, emotion and sexual chemistry make her the ideal director to bring
Christian and Anastasia’s relationship to life. EL James’ characters and vivid storytelling require a director who is willing to take risks and push the
envelope where needed, and Sam is a natural fit.
