Saoirse Ronan’s chances of nabbing a third Oscar nomination are getting stronger by the day. She’s already received an Indie Spirit nod, a Gotham Award, and a New York Film Critics Circle Award for her turn as Christine “Lady Bird” McPherson in Greta Gerwig’s “Lady Bird.” And now she’s been named the recipient of the Palm Springs International Film Festival’s (PSIFF) Desert Palm Achievement Award, Actress for her work in “Lady Bird.” A press release announced the news.
“Lady Bird” sees Ronan playing a rebellious Catholic high school senior who dreams of leaving Sacramento and attending college in New York City. The film recently overtook “Toy Story 2” as the best-reviewed movie ever and was named Best Film by the New York Film Critics Circle.
“Saoirse Ronan delivers one of the most outstanding performances of this year as an outspoken high school student growing up in Sacramento in the critically acclaimed film ‘Lady Bird,’” stated Festival Chairman Harold Matzner. “Following her exceptional performances in ‘Atonement’ and ‘Brooklyn,’ Ronan is sure to receive her third Academy Award nomination. It is our honor to present the Desert Palm Achievement Award, Actress to Saoirse Ronan.”
Cate Blanchett, Natalie Portman, and Julianne Moore are among the previous Desert Palm Achievement Award, Actress recipients.
PSIFF’s other 2018 awardees include Holly Hunter (Career Achievement Award), Allison Janney (Spotlight Award-Actress), and Gal Gadot (Rising Star Award). Prizes will be presented to recipients at the fest’s Film Awards Gala on January 2.
Ronan netted Academy Award nominations for “Brooklyn” and “Atonement.” She took home PSIFF’s International Star Award in 2016 for “Brooklyn.” The Irish actress hosted “SNL” this past weekend.
You can catch Ronan next in “On Chesil Beach,” a drama about a couple on their honeymoon, and Josie Rourke’s “Mary Queen of Scots,” a biopic about the rivalry between Mary Stuart (Ronan) and her cousin Queen Elizabeth I (Margot Robbie). “On Chesil Beach” hits theaters on June 15, 2018, “Mary Queen of Scots” on November 2.
PSIFF runs from January 2–15.
