Sara Bareilles served as composer and lyricist on “Waitress,” and now she’s joining the Broadway sensation’s cast. The Grammy- and Tony-nominated singer-songwriter will star in the musical for a 10-week run beginning March 31 and ending June 11, a press release has announced. Bareilles will play Jenna, the story’s main character, a waitress and pie baker who yearns to escape her abusive marriage. Jenna is usually portrayed by Tony winner Jessie Mueller.
The Broadway musical is adapted from Adrienne Shelly’s 2007 movie of the same name, starring Keri Russell (“The Americans”). The production recently made headlines for recouping its $12 million capitalization costs less than ten months after previews kicked off. Besides mega hit “Hamilton,” “Waitress” is the only musical from the 2015–16 season to recoup.
“‘Waitress’ has turned out to be one of the great, true loves of my life, and they simply can’t get rid of me,” Bareilles said in a statement. “I consider it an incredible honor to follow the masterful work of Jessie Mueller as she so gracefully brought the character of Jenna to life, and I am thrilled to continue to tell this story that has so much heart.” The multi platinum-selling artist continued, “This show changed my life in so many ways, and I feel great privilege in joining our beloved cast and crew who make me laugh and cry every time I watch the show. All I want is to keep sharing the love, and dear God please let me remember my lines,” she joked.
Bareilles’ contributions to “Waitress” have already earned her a Tony Award nomination for Best Original Score, Drama Desk Award nominations for Outstanding Music and Outstanding Lyrics, an Outer Critics Circle Award nomination for Outstanding New Score, and a Grammy nomination for Best Musical Theater Album.
