After wrapping up a successful run in Cambridge on September 27, the Sara Bareilles’ stage musical “Waitress” is heading to Broadway.
Starring Tony-winning actress Jessie Mueller, the production is based on the 2007 film by the late writer-director Adrienne Shelly, about a culinary genius slumming it as a server. Jenna’s eager to flee her unhappy marriage and escape the confines of her small town, but finds herself pregnant with her husband’s baby.
The current production at the American Repertory Theatre is directed by Diane Paulus, who also serves as that institution’s artistic director. In addition to Bareilles’ song and lyrics, the female contributions to the musical also include Jessie Nelson’s book for the musical.
Exact casting and schedule details are TBD, but the show will begin previews next March and open at the Brooks Atkinson Theatre the following month.
