“Modern Family’s” Sarah Hyland is joining forces with the Oscar-nominated co-writer of “The Big Sick.” Hyland will collaborate with Emily V. Gordon on a semi-autobiographical series. ABC snagged the project with a put pilot commitment, Deadline reports.
Currently untitled, the series will be penned by Gordon. Plot details are being kept under wraps, but it seems very possible that the project will address health issues.
“The Big Sick” was based on Gordon’s relationship with Kumail Nanjiani, her co-writer and husband. The two were in the early days of dating when she contracted a mysterious illness, later identified as Still’s disease, and ended up in a coma. Hyland has gone public with her struggles with chronic illness and the resulting depression she’s experienced. She was born with kidney dysplasia, and has undergone two kidney transplants.
Hyland and Gordon are among the show’s exec producers.
Gordon has spoken out about the sexist treatment she’s received in the industry and the importance of male allies. As the only woman at a photoshoot with other writers, the photographer told her to be “sassy.” “He’s like, ‘Put your hand on your hip, get sassy,’” she recalled. “And I was mad but I was also like, ‘This is so stupid, like really, sassy?!’ And [‘Get Out’ writer-director] Jordan Peele said, ‘Would you like me to be more hood in the photo?’ And that’s what we need; I can handle this on my own, but it’s so much easier if I have that support.”
A former therapist, Gordon’s other writing credits include “Crashing” and “The Carmichael Show.”
“Modern Family’s” 11th and final season premieres September 25 on ABC. Hyland plays Haley on the Emmy-winning sitcom.
