Sasheer Zamata and Stella Meghie are teaming up. The “SNL” alumna is set to topline “The Weekend,” a comedy from “Everything, Everything” helmer Meghie, Deadline reports. The pic sees Zamata playing a comedian. Written and directed by Meghie, “The Weekend” is being produced and financed by Marada Pictures’ Sarah Lazow and James Gibb. Meghie is also among the film’s producers.
“The Weekend” follows Zamata’s character as she heads on a weekend away with her ex-boyfriend (Tone Bell, “Disjointed”) and his new girlfriend (DeWanda Wise, “She’s Gotta Have It”). “Over the course of the weekend, they’re drawn into an unexpected romantic entanglement with the arrival of another guest,” the source hints.
Meghie’s latest film, 2017’s “Everything, Everything,” starred “Hunger Games’” Amandla Stenberg as a teen who’s allergic to almost everything. An adaptation of Nicola Yoon’s best-selling YA novel of the same name, the pic grossed over $61 million worldwide on a budget of $10 million. Meghie made her feature debut with “Jean of the Joneses,” a comedy about a writer who crashes with family members after going on a “break” with her boyfriend. The film opened at SXSW 2016 and scored a Best First Screenplay nomination at the Indie Spirit Awards.
In October it was announced that Meghie will write and direct “The Photograph” for Universal, described as a “generational story about love and family.”
“I feel like my purpose is to tell contemporary stories about young black women — like the ones I know,” Meghie has said. “That’s all I really care to tell for the most part. I’ll leave the heavy history lifting to others.”
