Screenwriter Anya Kochoff Romano is set to make her directorial debut, Variety reports. The woman behind the scripts for 2016’s “Mother’s Day” and 2005’s “Monster-in-Law” will take the helm on Phoenix Rising Pictures’ “Camp Pow Wow,” an ensemble comedy that she penned.
According to Variety, “Camp Pow Wow” “centers on five backstabbing and vengeful office workers forced to endure each other’s company at a sleep-away camp for adults for the week.”
Kochoff Romano has criticized the lack of roles available to actresses, suggesting that “there aren’t a lot of good parts being written for women.” Based on this observation, it seems likely that “Camp Pow Wow’s” five-person ensemble will include female characters.
“Monster-in-Law,” starring Jennifer Lopez and Jane Fonda, grossed over $154 million on a budget of $43 million. Kochoff Romano was one of three screenwriters credited for “Mother’s Day,” late director Gary Marshall’s final film. She was approached to do rewrites and accepted the job because she was such a big fan of Marshall’s “Pretty Woman.”
