Gunpowder & Sky has announced its innovative release strategy for “Sea Fever.” Through its sci-fi label, Dust, the entertainment company “is set to have the first-ever live streaming premiere” with the horror pic. Deadline broke the news.
Written and directed by Neasa Hardiman, “Sea Fever” centers on a doctoral candidate in marine biology who gets more than she bargained for in the deep Atlantic. Siobhán (Hermione Corfield, “Rust Creek”) joins the crew of a fishing trawler for one week to photograph their catches. Her fieldwork takes an unexpected — and potentially deadly — turn when a mysterious specimen ensnares the boat and begins to infect crew members.
“I wanted to tell a story full of natural wonder that hits you in the pit of your stomach. I wanted to tell a story where men and women of different neurotypes and ethnicities all have agency and individuality,” Hardiman told us. “I wanted to tell a story about how the ship of humanity needs all hands on deck to right itself.”
In addition to hosting a live screening of “Sea Fever,” Dust will offer audiences an interactive Q&A with Hardiman and cast member Connie Nielsen.
Described by a press release as a first-of-its-kind virtual communal experience, the premiere will give audiences “the chance to interact with each other and the film’s stars in the comfort of their own homes.”
“Sea Fever’s” theatrical run was cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The film made its world premiere at the 2019 Toronto Film Festival and made its NY premiere at the 2020 Athena Film Festival.
“Like everyone else, we are adjusting to life’s new challenges on a daily basis and feel ‘Sea Fever’ is more relevant than ever,” said Janet Brown, EVP of Acquisitions and Global Distribution for Gunpowder & Sky. “We are psyched to host the first-ever live experience of a film screening, and can’t wait to share it with audiences!”
The live stream event will take place here on Thursday, April 9 at 5pm PT / 8pm ET and can be accessed with a pay-per-view fee. A moderated Q&A will follow the credits.
“Sea Fever” will hit On Demand and Digital April 10.
