Last year was quite the eventful one for tennis champion Serena Williams. In January 2017 Williams won her seventh Australian Open. And she didn’t just dominate: she did so while eight weeks pregnant. Now, per Variety, HBO Sports has joined forces with IMG to share her personal journey — both on an off the court — with the world via a five-part documentary series fittingly titled “Being Serena.”
The series will follow Williams and her growing family through pregnancy, birth, her marriage to American entrepreneur Alexis Ohanian, and, of course, her relationship with tennis during this new phase of her life. As Williams herself contemplates in “Being Serena’s” teaser trailer, she must decide whether there is, in fact, anything left for her in the sport. One thing, though, is certain: she isn’t done yet.
“Serena Williams is a force unlike any other,” IMG and WME co-president Mark Shapiro commented. “Her entire life is one of the hero’s journey, and it has been a privilege to work with her as she enters this next phase.”
The project’s May debut parallels Williams’ participation in the first Grand Slam event since her pregnancy. She will compete in this year’s French Open.
“Being Serena” premieres on HBO May 2. Check out HBO’s teaser trailer for the series below.
