Series About London’s First Female Detective in the Works at A+E Networks International

"Peaky Blinders'" Kate Phillips will star: BBC2

A+E Networks International’s first international, scripted co-production will be the story of a trailblazing woman. Screen Daily reports the company is developing “Miss Scarlet and the Duke,” a period crime series following 19th century London’s first female detective. “Peaky Blinders” actress Kate Phillips will star. The project hails from “Grantchester” and “Eastenders” scribe Rachael New.

Production on “Miss Scarlet and the Duke” is expected to kick off spring 2019 in Australia, New Zealand, the UK, and the States. Element 8 Entertainment’s Patty Ishimoto is executive producing, as are Todd Berger and Patrick Irwin.

“A+E Networks International is very excited about ‘Miss Scarlet and the Duke,’ which has fantastic writing by Rachael New,” said Richard Tulk-Hart, A+E Networks managing director, international content sales and co-productions. “New’s script drew in Kate Phillips, and we have incredible exec producers signed on — Patty Ishimoto, Todd Berger, and Patrick Irwin. This is a thrilling series about which we are very proud, with an incredibly strong female lead, and a captivating storyline.”

“The Crown,” “War & Peace,” and “Wolf Hall” are among Phillips’ previous credits. You can catch her next in “The Aftermath,” a period romance set in post-WWII Germany. It hits theaters April 26. Phillips will also appear in the “Downton Abbey” movie, which is currently filming.

New co-created “Monday Monday,” a series about a struggling supermarket and its employees. Her other writing credits include “Trollied” and upcoming detective show “The Mallorca Files.”
