“Wonder Woman’s” scribe is hoping to bring more stories about female superheroes to the screen. This time, Allan Heinberg will bring caped crusaders to TV: he, Marvel Television, and ABC Studios just scored a production commitment from ABC for an untitled hourlong drama about female superheroes with special powers. Deadline broke the news.
Penned by Heinberg, the project is said to be based on “lesser-known” Marvel characters, but further details aren’t available. As for who the characters could be, the source points to team-ups A-Force, Lady Liberators, and Fearless Defenders.
“Grey’s Anatomy,” “Gilmore Girls,” and “Sex and the City” are among Heinberg’s TV credits.
Recent female-led Marvel series include “Jessica Jones” and “Agent Carter.” The latter will return to Netflix for its third season, but a premiere date for the Krysten Ritter-starrer about a hard-drinking private investigator has yet to be announced. The former starred Hayley Atwell as a secret agent and ran for two seasons on ABC in 2015-16 before being cancelled.
“Captain Marvel,” Marvel’s first female-centric film, is set to hit theaters March 8, 2019. Brie Larson stars in the pic about a galactic war between two alien races. “Captain Marvel” is also the first Marvel film to be helmed by a woman: Anna Boden co-directed alongside Ryan Fleck. The collaborators’ previous features include “Mississippi Grind” and “Half Nelson.”
