Kelly Fremon Craig’s not the only one with a Judy Blume adaptation on the way. We’ve been looking forward to the “Edge of Seventeen” writer-director’s upcoming take on “Are You There God? It’s Me, Margaret” for years, and now we have another Blume-inspired project to look forward to. “Being Mary Jane” creator Mara Brock Akil is prepping a series based on “Forever” as part of her pact with Netflix. The Hollywood Reporter confirmed the news.
Akil’s version of “Forever” is set in LA and sees two Black high schoolers navigating “first love and intimacy amidst social and parental pressures.” A frequent target of censorship, Blume’s book was published in 1975. The YA romance was seen as controversial for its depiction of sex and its protagonist’s use of birth control.
Among other projects, Akil also has “Astronaut Chicks” in development at Netflix, the story of “four young, female Black friends [who] challenge each other to live a fly life, launch some dreams, and land on some purpose.”
Head over to THR to read more about projects Akil has in the pipeline at the streamer. Her previous credits include “Girlfriends” and “The Game.”
