“Sex and the City” Revival Coming to HBO Max

"Sex and the City": HBO

And just like that, we reunited with Carrie Bradshaw, Charlotte York, and Miranda Hobbes. A “Sex and the City” revival has been given a series order at HBO Max, a press release announced. The 10-episode half-hour show, “And Just Like That…,” will kick off production this spring.

Sarah Jessica Parker, who will reprise her role as Carrie Bradshaw, posted a teaser for the new project on Instagram:

Based on Candace Bushnell’s book “Sex and the City,” the new show will follow Carrie, Miranda, and Charlotte “as they navigate the journey from the complicated reality of life and friendship in their 30s to the even more complicated reality of life and friendship in their 50s.” Parker will topline and executive produce, as will Cynthia Nixon and Kristin Davis, who respectively portray Miranda and Charlotte. Original series writer-director-producer Michael Patrick King will exec produce as well.

“I grew up with these characters, and I can’t wait to see how their story has evolved in this new chapter, with the honesty, poignancy, humor, and the beloved city that has always defined them,” said Sarah Aubrey, Head of Original Content, HBO Max.

Parker, Nixon, Davis, and Kim Cattrall starred in the original “SATC” series. The seminal look at single womanhood, sex, dating, and love aired from 1998-2004, picked up seven Emmy Awards, and spawned two hit movie sequels. Beginning in Season 3, Parker served as producer.

In 2019, Paramount Television and Anonymous Content won the rights to Bushnell’s  “Is There Still Sex in the City?,” which examines many of the same topics “Sex and the City,” but from the perspective of women in their 50s. It’s unclear if “And Just Like That…” stemmed from that project.

Another Bushnell adaptation, The CW’s “Carrie Diaries,” traces Carrie Bradshaw’s teen years. Based on the YA novel of the same name, the show ran for two seasons, from 2013-2014.

Parker won two Emmys for “SATC,” Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy Series and Outstanding Comedy Series. She nabbed the latter for producing. She starred in and produced the dark HBO comedy “Divorce.” The two “SATC” movies are also among her producing credits.

You can see Nixon next in “The Gilded Age,” a period series from “Downton Abbey’s” Julian Fellowes. Her more recent on-screen credits include “Ratched” and “Stray Dolls.” Davis last appeared in Netflix’s “Holiday in the Wild.”
