A television series about a group of female vigilantes working to protect women and children could be on the way. Author and filmmaker Shamim Sarif is adapting her new novel, “The Athena Protocol,” for the small screen. She’ll pen the pilot for Village Roadshow Entertainment Group, which acquired the book rights, and is also attached to direct on the show. Deadline broke the news.
Published this October, “The Athena Protocol” features six women protagonists, including Jessie, “a hot-headed young agent at Athena, a top secret, socially-conscious vigilante organization focused on helping women and children worldwide,” the source teases. “When Jessie breaks protocol and assassinates a target, she’s ousted from Athena just as her teammates set out to take down a human trafficker in Belgrade. Going rogue in order to prove herself, Jessie finds there’s no one to watch her back as she gets closer to the horrifying truth behind the mission.”
Sarif will also executive produce the show with her producing partner and wife, Hanan Kattan.
Sarif originally wrote “The Athena Protocol” as a feature entitled “The Artemis Protocol.” The script was selected for the 2017 Athena List. She then adapted the screenplay into a novel. “The Artemis Protocol’s” sequel, “The Shadow Mission,” is expected in October 2020.
Previously, Sarif wrote and directed the film adaptations of her books “The World Unseen,” “I Can’t Think Straight,” and “Despite the Falling Snow.” She also helmed the documentary “The House of Tomorrow” with Kattan.
“Be passionate or don’t start. Be tenacious or you won’t finish,” Sarif told us when we asked for her advice for other women filmmakers. “The best support you will get is to find a great producer who shares your passion and tenacity and who can push you through the moments when you feel it is never going to come together.”
