Sharon Horgan is returning to the “Motherland” — and she’s bringing Paul Feig with her. According to Deadline, the multi-hyphenates are collaborating with Lionsgate on a U.S. remake of “Motherland,” Horgan’s BBC Two comedy about the ups and downs of middle-class parenthood.
Now in early development, the new “Motherland” has brought on Julieanne Smolinski (“Grace and Frankie”) to write. Horgan will exec produce with her Merman producing partner Clelia Mountford and “Motherland” colleague Holly Walsh. Feig is attached through his Feigco Entertainment company, which is under a first-look deal with Lionsgate.
Created by Horgan, Walsh, Helen Linehan, and Graham Linehan, and hailing from Merman and Delightful Industries, the original “Motherland” has run for two seasons on BBC Two and will return for a third. The ensemble cast includes Anna Maxwell Martin, Diane Morgan, Lucy Punch, Philippa Dunne, Tanya Moodie, and Paul Ready. U.S. audiences can stream it on Sundance Now and AMC+.
“Military Wives,” “How to Build a Girl,” and “Disenchantment” are among Horgan’s more recent acting credits. She has written for and created series including “Pulling,” “Dead Boss,” “Women on the Verge,” “Divorce,” and “Catastrophe.” She scored an Emmy nod for her writing on the latter. Horgan directed an episode of “Modern Love,” the Amazon Anthology based on the New York Times column of the same name.
“This Country,” another U.S. remake of a British comedy from Feig, landed a 14-episode series order at Fox. The “Bridesmaid” director is helming the pilot and “Sex and the City” alumna Jenny Bicks is writing.
