Hailee Steinfeld may be teaming up with the director behind one of the most beloved romantic comedies of all time. “Bridget Jones’s Diary” helmer Sharon Maguire is in talks to direct the Oscar-nominated actress in Sony Pictures’ “Voicemails for Isabelle.” Deadline broke the news.
Based on a spec by Leah McKendrick, the rom-com is set in LA and sees Steinfeld’s character navigating the dating scene. “Though it is the 21st century, there is a bit of ‘You’ve Got Mail’ in that technology is used to bring together a couple,” the source details.
Steinfeld received an Oscar nod in 2011 for her breakout performance in “True Grit.” Since then, her credits have included “Pitch Perfect 2,” “Pitch Perfect 3,” and “The Edge of Seventeen.” She voiced Gwen Stacy in this year’s Oscar-winning animated film “Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse.” She was last seen in 2018 “Transformers” spinoff “Bumblebee.” The blockbuster grossed over $467 million worldwide. Steinfeld is signed on to play Emily Dickinson in an upcoming Apple series about the poet.
Renée Zellweger received an Oscar nod for “Bridget Jones’s Diary” — a rare instance of the Academy recognizing a rom-com. Maguire’s other directing credits include “Bridget Jones’s Baby” and “Incendiary.”
