“Shrill” Renewed for Season 3

"Shrill": Allyson Riggs / Hulu

Annie Easton is ushering in a new era of her life. After saying goodbye to her deadbeat boyfriend, the Portland-based writer will re-enter the dating game in “Shrill’s” third season. Variety confirmed that Hulu has renewed the series for a third run consisting of eight episodes.

Based on former Jezebel blogger Lindy West’s book of the same name, the comedy sees Annie (Aidy Bryant) learning to live unapologetically as a fat woman. Tired of being made to feel inferior for her size, Annie is ready to stand up for herself professionally and personally.

Bryant previously told The Hollywood Reporter that she’d “love to do a third season.” She hinted, “We have so many ideas that I feel like I would be so excited to weave in there. I think part of what I would be excited to show is that yes, she has come to the other side of some of her insecurities, but they do rear their ugly head. I think having to put yourself out there in the dating world is, like, trigger city,” the “SNL” cast member explained. “And we got into it a little bit this season — like in the sixth episode you see Annie have chub rub — but I would love to go a little deeper on some of the daily indignities of living with a body that sometimes betrays you or that other people have feelings about, and having to suffer those. I just feel like there’s so much more to be said and to be done with it.”

Bryant, West, Elizabeth Banks, and showrunner Ali Rushfield are among “Shrill’s” exec producers.

Besides her work on “SNL,” for which she’s received two Emmy nods, Bryant’s other credits include “I Feel Pretty,” “Girls,” and “The Big Sick.”
