Maya Forbes and Sigourney Weaver are joining forces to bring “The Good House” to the big screen. The former will direct the latter in Amblin Partners’ adaptation of Ann Leary’s New York Times bestseller. Deadline confirmed the news.
Set to begin production this week in Canada, “The Good House” follows Hildy Good (Weaver), “a wry New England realtor and descendant of the Salem witches who loves her wine and loves her secrets,” the source hints. “Her compartmentalized life starts to unravel as she rekindles an old romance and becomes dangerously entwined in one person’s reckless behavior.”
Forbes penned the script with Wally Wolodarsky and both will direct. The pair previously co-wrote “A Dog’s Purpose,” an episode of “American Crime,” and “Polka,” among other projects. Forbes directed the latter, a 2017 feature about a Pennsylvania polka legend starring Jack Black and Jenny Slate. Forbes made her directorial debut with 2014’s “Infinitely Polar Bear,” a family drama about a father struggling with bipolar disorder. Forbes received Emmy nods for her work on “The Larry Sanders Show.”
“Trust your voice and run towards every element that scares you,” Forbes told us when we asked what advice she’d give women directors. “You need confidence, but you don’t need to be macho to direct a movie.”
A three-time Oscar nominee, Weaver has been recognized for her performances in “Aliens,” “Working Girl,” and “Gorillas in the Mist.” “The Defenders” and “A Monster Calls” are among her more recent credits.
Universal will release “The Good House” in North America. Amblin Partners and Universal share international distribution rights.
