Hello (again), Clarice. Clarice Starling is heading to the small screen. CBS just finalized deals for “‘Clarice,’ a crime drama series project based on the famous Thomas Harris character Clarice Starling, which is set after the events in ‘The Silence Of the Lambs,'” Deadline reports.
Written and executive produced by Jenny Lumet and Alex Kurtzman, the potential series is set in 1993, a year after the events of “The Silence of the Lambs.” “Clarice” offers “a deep dive into the untold personal story of Clarice Starling, as she returns to the field to pursue serial murderers and sexual predators while navigating the high stakes political world of Washington, D.C.”
The series has “received a big script commitment,” and the source emphasizes that there’s a great deal of “enthusiasm for the title, the premise, and the auspices at the network.”
“After more than 20 years of silence, we’re privileged to give voice to one of America’s most enduring heroes – Clarice Starling,” said Lumet and Kurtzman. “Clarice’s bravery and complexity have always lit the way, even as her personal story remained in the dark. But hers is the very story we need today: her struggle, her resilience, her victory. Her time is now, and always.”
Lumet, Kurtzman, and Secret Hideout’s Heather Kadin are among the project’s exec producers. The former two are co-creators and co-showrunners on “The Man Who Fell to Earth,” an upcoming sci-fi series on CBS All Access. Lumet penned the script for 2008 Anne Hathaway-starrer “Rachel Getting Married.”
Originally published in 1988, “The Silence of the Lambs” was adapted into a 1991 film led by Jodie Foster, who won a Best Actress Oscar for her portrayal of Clarice. Julianne Moore played the character in 2001 sequel “Hannibal.”
A leading actress hasn’t been chosen for “Clarice” yet.
