It’s been over two decades since the last “Sister Act” movie, “Sister Act 2: Back in the Habit,” was released, but Disney is apparently confident that singing and dancing nuns never go out of style.
The studio has begun work on a remake of “Sister Act.” Kirsten Smith and Karen McCullah, the women behind the female-centric hits “Legally Blonde” and “The House Bunny,” will pen the script. The two have previous experience with Disney, which released and produced their first film, “10 Things I Hate About You.” Allison Shearmur (“Cinderella”) is slated to produce.
The original 1992 fish-out-of-water comedy starred Whoopi Goldberg as a Reno lounge singer ordered to live in a convent in San Francisco — and pose as a nun — after she’s put in protective custody. (She’s fleeing a mob boss who put her on his hit list.) While the plot is every bit as ludicrous as it sounds, it works, and “Sister Act” struck a major chord with audiences. The film, which co-starred Maggie Smith, earned an impressive $232 million worldwide. The aforementioned sequel was released only a year after the original, and “Sister Act” was later adapted into a Tony Award-winning musical.
Smith and McCullah seem like a good fit for this project. Smith has previously said, “We like fish-out-of-water stories, underdog
movies. We are drawn to those characters that have a real strong
sense of themselves but are underestimated by the people around them. And that
provides for a lot of comedy, and also a lot of heart.”
It’s unclear whether Goldberg and other original cast members will return for the newest installment of the franchise.
