After inviting five white guys in a row to host and roast the President and Washington politicians, the White House Correspondents Association has finally decided to shake things up.
SNL’s Cecily Strong will serve as the featured entertainer at next year’s Correspondents’ Dinner. “Her political humor is sly and edgy, and it comes with a Chicago accent,” commented WHCD President Christi Parsons.
Since the hosts of the Correspondents’ Dinner generally come from late-night TV, which suffers its own rather conspicuous problems with diversity, it isn’t altogether surprising that Strong will be only the fifth solo hostess in the WHCD’s history.
In 1992, Paula Poundstone became the first female solo host of the Dinner. She has been followed by Elayne Boosler in 1993, Aretha Franklin in 1999 (in a change from the standard comedian), Wanda Sykes in 2009, and now Strong.
