So Yong Kim’s “Lovesong” Acquired by Strand

“Lovesong”

Strand Releasing has purchased select U.S. rights to So Yong Kim’s “Lovesong,” Variety reports. Jena Malone (“The Neon Demon,” “The Hunger Games” franchise) and Riley Keough (“The Girlfriend Experience,” “Mad Max: Fury Road”) star as more-than-platonic pals in the road trip movie that fast forwards years into the future when one of them is about to get married.

“Lovesong,” Kim’s fourth feature, premiered at Sundance earlier this year. Kim penned the script with Brad Rust Gray (“Jack & Diane”). She previously wrote and directed “In Between Days,” “Treeless Mountain,” and “For Ellen.”

Gamechanger Films, an equity fund that supports female-directed features, provided some of the film’s financing. A release is planned for early next year.

Check out an interview Variety conducted with Kim, Malone, and Keough below. In it, Kim explains that she wanted to “tell a love story.” The trio talks about the experience of making “Lovesong” and what distinguishes Kim as a director.
