Sofia Carson is going to show a group of youngsters how it’s done on the dance floor. The “Pretty Little Liars: The Perfectionists” and “Descendants” star has signed on to topline “Feel the Beat,” a Netflix dance pic. Deadline confirmed the news.
Directed by Elissa Down, “Feel the Beat” sees Carson playing a Broadway hopeful unable to find her big break. She returns to her hometown where she’s “recruited to train a misfit group of young dancers for a big competition,” the source summarizes.
Down made her feature debut with 2008’s “The Black Balloon. She most recently helmed 2018’s “The Honor List,” a coming-of-age drama that tells the story of childhood friends who drift apart. The former BFFs reunite under tragic circumstances to fulfill a bucket list before they graduate high school.
“We wanted to work with women and 60 percent of the crew were women. And we felt strongly that [‘The Honor List’] should have gender parity,” Down has said. “I wanted a crew which could reflect their experiences on the film. I did think it was very important to have a female DP, because when you look at photography there’s a dramatic difference between the way the male lens photographs teenage girls and the way the female lens will.” She explained, “There’s always this sexual gaze to the male gaze where the female gaze will show girls how they like to be presented. And I thought that was very important to have female production designer, who could bring her memories of being a teenager to the design of their bedrooms.”
