The highest-paid actress on TV is using her clout and business acumen to tell more Latin American stories with Raze, a digital startup.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, “Modern Family” star Sofia Vergara is working with frequent business partner Luis Balaguer and former Fox executive Emiliano Calemzuk to introduce “a mobile platform for editorial and video content that will appeal largely to young Latin American audiences.”
Expected sometime in mid-2017, Raze will also include a production company “that will produce Latin-focused content to sell to TV networks and streaming video services,” the source details.
“We want to become the voice of a Latino perspective and we’ll do that on our platform,” Calemzuk commented.
And it seems that the Latina perspective in particular will be well-served at Raze, as well. The company has already produced women-centric stories, with more on the docket. The platform’s flagship series is “Her Name Was Dolores — The Jenn I Knew,” which debuted on Univision. The production company is also working on a TV adaptation of the novel “Mi Hermanastro,” by Daniela Cubides.
We hope this pattern of producing content about and by women will continue as Raze grows.
Vergara is the latest high-profile actress to explore opportunities behind the camera via their own production companies. Eva Longoria, Jessica Chastain, America Ferrera, Alicia Vikander, and Rebecca Miller are just a few others.
In a culture that is notoriously difficult for women to navigate and succeed in, it’s inspiring to see talented businesswomen create their own dream jobs and cultivate opportunities for other women along the way. Vergara is using her status to boost women-centric projects, develop stories from Latino voices, and increase inclusivity in television.
