Soleil Moon Frye’s “Kid 90” Doc Lands at Hulu

Frye on "Access"

Soleil Moon Frye is set to deliver a blast from the past. The author, filmmaker, and actress best known for playing the the titular lead of NBC’s “Punky Brewster” has secured U.S. distribution for her latest directorial effort. Hulu snagged the rights to “Kid 90,” a documentary described as a “blueprint of Frye’s life, featuring home videos, voicemails, audio recordings, and diary entries she has preserved.” A press release confirmed the news.

Linda Perry will be creating an original score for the doc.

“When I was growing up in the 90s, I carried a video camera with me everywhere I went, and then I locked the footage away for over 20 years,” said Frye. “I often wondered if things had happened the way that I remembered them and I finally decided to unlock the vault. What started as a documentary about my friends and our lives soon became a coming-of-age story about myself that has changed me forever.”

Belisa Balaban, VP of Documentaries at Hulu, added, “Soleil’s deeply personal film provides a window into her unique experience of growing up in the public eye, with all of its rewards and challenges.”

“Punky Brewster” aired from 1984-86. NBC streamer Peacock has ordered a 10-episode revival of the sitcom with Frye reprising her iconic role. The “Sabrina the Teenage Witch” alumna co-wrote and co-directed 1998’s “Wild Horses,” a pic about a group of teachers who are under the mistaken impression that they have 24 hours to live. She also directed 2004’s “Sonny Boy,” a doc about her relationship with her father.

Hulu released “Hillary,” a docuseries about Hillary Rodham Clinton, earlier this year. The Nanette Burstein-directed project is up for an Emmy for Outstanding Documentary or Nonfiction Series. The streamer is joining forces with BBC Three on an upcoming six-part docuseries that sees “Carnival Row” actress Cara Delevingne delving into sex, sexuality, gender, and identity.
