The USS Discovery has its female lead. As Deadline reports, Sonequa Martin-Green has landed the lead role in CBS All Access’ upcoming “Star Trek: Discovery.” She’ll be playing Lt. Cmdr. Rainsford.
When the series was first announced, it was revealed that the lead would be a female officer who is not a captain. It was also announced that the cast would be a diverse one, reflecting the future that it’s depicting.
The series will feature about seven lead characters, one of which will be gay. “‘Star Trek’ started with a wonderful expression of diversity in its cast: a Russian, a black woman, an Asian, a Vulcan … we’re continuing that tradition and our lead of the show is going to be subject of that same level of who is the best actor and what can we say about diversity in every role we’ll have on the show,” said former showrunner Bryan Fuller. “We wanted to paint a picture of Starfleet that’s indicative of encountering people who are much more different than we are.”
Fuller stepped down as “Discovery’s” showrunner in October. Gretchen J. Berg and Aaron Harberts took over his duties, and according to Entertainment Weekly, they are “are moving forward with his original vision.”
Martin-Green currently appears on AMC’s “The Walking Dead.” Considering that anyone can be killed off at any moment on that show, it might be a hint as to the future of her character, Sasha.
Martin-Green joins the previously announced “Star Trek: Discovery” cast members: Doug Jones as Lt. Saru, a Starfleet Science Officer; Anthony Rapp as Lt. Stamets, an astromycologist, fungus expert, and Starfleet Science Officer; Michelle Yeoh as Starfleet captain Georgiou; and Chris Obi, Shazad Latif and Mary Chieffo as Klingons.
“Star Trek: Discovery” was set to premiere in January but has been moved to May, 2017 for the streaming site. This marks the second female-led series for CBS All-Access. The network has “The Good Wife” spinoff, “The Good Fight,” starring Christine Baranski coming up as well.
